Singapore football legend Fandi Ahmad has described turning down a trial with Dutch giants AFC Ajax as his biggest regret. The 62-year-old former striker, who started his professional career at age 16, revealed the missed opportunity in a recent interview.
In 1978, Ajax invited Fandi for a trial after he impressed during a youth tournament in the Netherlands. However, he declined due to family commitments and his national service obligations in Singapore. 'It was a difficult decision, but I had to think about my family and my duty to the country,' Fandi said.
Fandi went on to have a storied career, playing for clubs in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and scoring 51 goals in 101 appearances for the Singapore national team. He remains one of the most recognizable figures in Singapore football, later managing the national team and his own academy.
Despite his success, Fandi admits the Ajax regret lingers. 'I often wonder what could have been. It's a lesson for young players: when opportunity knocks, you must be ready to take it,' he added.
