Road expert Felix Tjozongoro has suggested that driver attitude, rather than road conditions, may be the primary reason for accidents on Windhoek's Western Bypass. His comments come after residents and road users blamed the bypass's sharp curves and steep descent for contributing to crashes.
Tjozongoro, speaking to local media, said that while road design can be a factor, the behavior of motorists—such as speeding, following too closely, and distracted driving—often plays a larger role. He emphasized that drivers need to adapt to the road's conditions and exercise caution.
The Western Bypass, a major route in Namibia's capital, has seen several accidents in recent months, prompting calls for safety improvements. However, Tjozongoro argues that without addressing driver behavior, even the best road infrastructure may not prevent accidents.
Local authorities have not yet responded to the expert's remarks, but the discussion highlights the ongoing debate over road safety in Namibia.
