The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) signed the intergovernmental agreement for the Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic African Gas Pipeline in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on July 19, 2026. The pipeline, estimated at $25 billion, will span 6,800 kilometers and is now entering its institutional and financial phase.
The agreement was signed by ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization, Sediko Douka, and the Director General of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco, Amina Benkhadra. The pipeline will transport Nigerian gas through 13 West African countries to Morocco and Europe.
The project, first announced in 2016, aims to improve energy access in West Africa and reduce gas flaring in Nigeria. The next steps include securing financing and finalizing the project's institutional framework.
