As Morocco prepares for a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, many opticians report difficulty in sourcing specialized eclipse glasses, according to a survey by LeBrief.
Contacting about fifteen opticians across the country, LeBrief found that several had run out of stock or were unable to obtain new supplies in time for the event. The shortage appears to be widespread, affecting both major chains and independent stores.
Experts warn that viewing the eclipse without proper protection can cause serious eye damage. The Moroccan Ministry of Health has advised the public to use only certified eclipse glasses that meet international safety standards (ISO 12312-2).
Some opticians suggest that people who cannot find glasses can use indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, to safely observe the eclipse. The next partial solar eclipse visible from Morocco is expected in 2027.
