The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering providing two green loans totaling €65 million to Morocco's Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP), according to a document on the bank's website. The loans would be extended under the EBRD's Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) to support green investments in the country.
The proposed financing includes a senior loan of up to €50 million and a smaller loan of €15 million, both aimed at promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy projects among BCP's clients. The EBRD's board is expected to discuss the proposal in September 2026.
This initiative aligns with Morocco's national strategy to increase renewable energy capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The EBRD has been active in Morocco since 2012, having invested over €3 billion in more than 80 projects across various sectors.
The loans would be channeled through BCP to local businesses and households, enabling them to adopt green technologies. The EBRD's GEFF program has a strong track record in the region, having financed thousands of green projects.
If approved, the loans would mark another step in the EBRD's commitment to supporting Morocco's transition to a low-carbon economy. The bank has not yet issued an official statement, and details may change pending final approval.
