The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved two senior unsecured loans totaling €40 million to Attawfiq Micro-Finance (AMF), a leading microfinance institution in Morocco. The financing aims to support micro-enterprises and small businesses, particularly those led by women and youth, in line with the EBRD's strategy to promote financial inclusion and private sector development in the region.
According to the EBRD's official announcement on June 22, 2026, the loans will be used to expand AMF's lending capacity, enabling it to reach more underserved entrepreneurs. The first loan of €20 million is designated for on-lending to micro-enterprises, while the second €20 million loan will focus on green finance initiatives, such as energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for small businesses.
Attawfiq Micro-Finance, established in 1997, is one of the largest microfinance institutions in Morocco, with a network of over 200 branches serving more than 1.2 million clients. The EBRD has been a key partner in Morocco's financial sector, with previous investments in microfinance and small business lending totaling over €500 million since the country became a recipient of EBRD funding in 2012.
The loans are part of the EBRD's broader commitment to support Morocco's economic recovery and sustainable development, with a focus on green transition and digitalization. The bank has invested over €3 billion in Morocco across 80 projects since 2012, primarily in the financial, energy, and infrastructure sectors.
