DAKAR, June 24 (Reuters) – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is continuing to outpace response efforts, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.

β€œDespite the good progress we have made, the outbreak is still outpacing our response,” Tedros said during a press briefing. He noted that cases have been reported in both countries, with health workers facing challenges in accessing affected communities due to insecurity and logistical hurdles.

The WHO has deployed additional teams to support surveillance, contact tracing, and vaccination campaigns. However, Tedros emphasized that more international support is needed to contain the virus, which has a high fatality rate.

As of June 24, 2026, the outbreak has resulted in over 200 confirmed cases and more than 100 deaths across the two countries, according to WHO data. The agency is working with local health ministries to accelerate the response.
