Democratic Republic of Congo Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani survived a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly on April 29, 2026. The motion, initiated by opposition lawmakers, failed to secure the required majority to remove him from office.
The motion was filed after allegations of mismanagement and security failures in the eastern provinces, where armed groups continue to operate. However, the government defended Shabani's record, citing progress in security sector reforms.
According to parliamentary sources, 241 deputies voted against the motion, while 89 supported it. The vote was largely along party lines, with the ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) coalition blocking the attempt.
Shabani, appointed in 2024, has been a key figure in President FΓ©lix Tshisekedi's security strategy. The failed motion is seen as a political victory for the government, though critics argue it highlights ongoing tensions over security governance.
