Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history and a transformative figure for the Dallas Mavericks, died Sunday in Frisco, Texas, his family confirmed. He was 86.
Nelson, known for his innovative 'Nellie Ball' style, coached the Mavericks from 1997 to 2005, leading them to six playoff appearances. He also coached the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and New York Knicks, amassing 1,335 career regular-season wins.
Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Nelson played 14 seasons as a forward for the Boston Celtics, winning five NBA championships. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2012.
Nelson had moved from Maui to Frisco earlier this year to be closer to family. He is survived by his wife, Joy, and two sons, Donnie and Brian.
