Two men were handed lengthy prison sentences on Thursday for the murder of Dr. Michael Isabelle, a well-known general practitioner in Dobsonville, Soweto. Gordon Matwetwe Muningi, 52, and Rufus Tebogo Thutloa, 47, were convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The high court in Johannesburg sentenced Muningi to an effective 25 years in prison and Thutloa to 20 years. The pair were part of a group that stormed Dr. Isabelle's practice in October 2023, during which the doctor was shot and killed.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed the sentences, stating that the court found the murder was premeditated and that the robbers showed no regard for human life. The NPA welcomed the ruling, saying it sends a strong message that violent crime will not be tolerated.
Dr. Isabelle was a respected figure in the community, known for his dedication to his patients. His death sparked outrage and calls for better police protection in the area.
