Timor-Leste has successfully contained a diphtheria outbreak after reporting its first laboratory-confirmed case in more than five years. The case involved a five-year-old girl from Bidau-Santana in Dili Municipality, who was admitted to the national hospital HNGV on 13 February 2026 with fever and respiratory symptoms.
Health authorities, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, launched a rapid response, including contact tracing, vaccination campaigns, and public awareness efforts. As of early May 2026, no additional cases have been reported, indicating effective containment.
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection affecting the respiratory system, preventable through vaccination. The outbreak response highlighted the importance of maintaining high immunization coverage in Timor-Leste.
