French tennis player Diane Parry, ranked 92nd in the world, pulled off a stunning upset at Roland Garros on Saturday, defeating world No. 6 Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(10/3) to advance to the fourth round. The match, played on Court Philippe-Chatrier, lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes.
Parry, who entered the tournament as a wildcard, is the last French player remaining in the singles draw. She saved two match points in the final set tiebreak before clinching the victory on her first match point.
βI just tried to stay focused on every point,β Parry said in her on-court interview. βAmanda is an incredible player, so I knew I had to fight for every ball. The crowd was amazing.β
Anisimova, who won the Madrid Open earlier this month, struggled with her serve, hitting 12 double faults. Parry capitalized on the American's inconsistency, breaking her serve five times.
Parry will face either Ons Jabeur or Belinda Bencic in the fourth round. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman has never advanced past the fourth round of a Grand Slam.
