Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has addressed speculation about MS Dhoni's future with the franchise, stating that a decision on the former captain's playing career will be made after the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Dhoni, 44, has been a cornerstone of CSK since the IPL's inception, leading the team to multiple titles.
Speaking to reporters ahead of CSK's crucial match, Fleming said, 'We'll sit down with MS after the season and discuss what's best for him and the team. He's still a valuable player, but we need to look at the long-term plan.' Dhoni has scored 161 runs in 12 matches this season at a strike rate of 220.54, primarily as a finisher.
CSK currently faces elimination from playoff contention, sitting seventh on the points table with 10 points from 12 games. The team's inconsistent performance has fueled debate about Dhoni's role and future. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 but continues to play in the IPL.
Fleming emphasized that Dhoni's leadership and experience remain crucial for the franchise. 'MS's contribution goes beyond runs. His guidance in the dressing room is invaluable,' he added. The final decision on Dhoni's retention or retirement is expected after the season ends in late May 2026.
