Delta Air Lines has announced an increase in checked baggage fees for domestic and select short-haul international routes. The Atlanta-based carrier confirmed the fee changes, which reflect broader cost pressures facing the airline industry in 2026.
The new fee structure raises the cost of a first checked bag on domestic routes to $40, up from $35, while a second checked bag will now cost $45, up from $40. These changes apply to tickets purchased after the announcement date and affect most economy-class travelers who do not hold elite status or co-branded Delta credit cards.
Delta SkyMiles Medallion members, as well as customers holding the Delta SkyMiles American Express card, remain exempt from the new fees under existing cardholder benefits. Delta emphasized that travelers booking through its website or app can review applicable fees before completing their purchase.
The move follows similar fee adjustments by other major U.S. carriers in recent months. Airlines have pointed to elevated operating costs, including fuel and labor expenses, as key drivers behind ancillary fee increases. Baggage fees have become a significant revenue stream for U.S. airlines, collectively generating billions of dollars annually.
Consumer advocates have criticized the increases, arguing that they disproportionately affect budget-conscious travelers. Some industry analysts note that fee transparency remains a concern, as travelers may not always be aware of the full cost of their ticket until late in the booking process.
