Bryson DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty by PGA Tour rules officials for improving his lie during the third round of the 2026 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The incident occurred on the 14th hole when DeChambeau was seen using his club to press down the grass behind his ball in a bunker, which is a violation of Rule 8.1a.
According to the PGA Tour, the penalty was applied after a review of video footage. DeChambeau, who was in contention at the time, finished the round with a 74 and dropped to tied for 15th place. He later stated that he was unaware of the rule and accepted the penalty.
This is not the first time DeChambeau has faced scrutiny over rules violations; he was previously penalized for slow play and other infractions. The two-stroke penalty ultimately impacted his final standing in the tournament, which was won by Patrick Cantlay.
