The Chairperson of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa has announced an extension of the deadline for submissions of substantive input for developing the content of the draft outline of the General Comment on the Right to Environment.
According to the announcement, the new deadline is set for July 15, 2026. The call is open to State Parties, National Human Rights Institutions, civil society organizations, indigenous communities, academia, and other stakeholders.
The General Comment aims to clarify the scope and content of the right to a healthy environment under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. The Working Group is seeking input on key issues such as procedural obligations, substantive rights, and the relationship between environmental protection and human rights.
Interested parties are encouraged to submit their contributions in writing to the Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. Further details can be found on the Commission's official website.
