Dar es Salaam port in Tanzania is planning to construct a 12th berth to address growing cargo congestion, according to port authorities. The expansion aims to handle increasing volumes of goods transit, as the facility serves as a key gateway for landlocked East African countries.
The project, part of a broader modernization effort, is expected to begin construction in 2025, though specific timelines remain unconfirmed. The new berth will add capacity to the port, which has seen cargo throughput rise in recent years.
Port officials have not disclosed the exact cost or completion date, but the initiative aligns with Tanzania's infrastructure development plans. The port currently handles over 15 million tonnes of cargo annually, with congestion often causing delays.
This expansion is separate from ongoing upgrades at the port, including dredging and equipment modernization, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing turnaround times for vessels.
