Dangote Petroleum Refinery has expanded its operations with the installation of 4,000 new machines at its Ibeju-Lekki facility in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of efforts to increase fuel production capacity. The refinery, which is the world's largest single-train refinery, is targeting a processing capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day.
Devakumar Edwin, Group Vice President for Oil, Gas, and Fertiliser at Dangote Industries Limited, disclosed the expansion during a media tour of the refinery. He stated that the new machines are expected to enhance the refinery's output and support its goal of meeting domestic fuel demand and exporting to regional markets, including Kenya.
The refinery, which began operations in 2023, has a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The current expansion aims to more than double that capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. However, the timeline for achieving this target has not been officially confirmed.
This development is part of Dangote's broader strategy to reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported refined petroleum products and to become a major player in the African energy sector. The refinery has already begun exporting to various countries, and the expansion is expected to further strengthen its position in the global market.
