Dame Penelope Keith, the British actress celebrated for her portrayal of the snobbish Margo Leadbeatter in the 1970s sitcom The Good Life, has died at the age of 86. Her agent confirmed the news on June 29, 2026, stating she passed away peacefully at her home in Surrey, surrounded by family.
Born on April 2, 1940, in Sutton, Surrey, Keith trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before launching a stage and screen career. She gained fame as Margo in The Good Life (1975–1978), a role that earned her a BAFTA TV Award for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1977. She later starred in To the Manor Born (1979–1981) and The Best of Everything (1995–1997).
Keith was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990 and elevated to Dame Commander (DBE) in 2014 for services to drama and charity. She was a patron of several organizations, including the Royal Theatrical Fund and the National Benevolent Fund for the Aged.
Tributes have poured in from fellow actors and fans. Actor Richard Briers, her co-star in The Good Life, called her 'a brilliant comic talent and a dear friend.' The BBC described her as 'one of Britain's most beloved comedy actresses.'
