The 11th edition of the Dakhla Downwind Challenge officially began on August 15, 2026, in Dakhla, Morocco. The event is held under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI and brings together around fifty participants of various nationalities for a nearly 500-kilometer kitesurfing expedition along the Atlantic coast.
According to the event organizers, the challenge is one of the longest kitesurfing races in the world, taking riders from Dakhla to the south, navigating through some of the most scenic and challenging waters in the region. The route is known for its strong winds and diverse marine conditions, making it a test of endurance and skill.
This year's edition emphasizes sustainability and local community engagement, with organizers implementing measures to minimize environmental impact and promote the region's tourism. The event is supported by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism and the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab regional council.
Participants include both professional and amateur kitesurfers from countries such as France, Spain, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. The race is expected to take several days, with daily stages and rest stops along the coast.
