Claire Williams, the former deputy team principal of the Williams Formula 1 team, has called for the sport to give teams more time to adjust to its latest technical regulations. In an interview with Motorsport.com, Williams stated that the current rules, introduced in 2022 and refined since, are complex and require a longer period for teams to fully understand and optimize their cars.
Williams, who left the team in 2020 after its sale to Dorilton Capital, drew a comparison to the popular video game Mario Kart, suggesting the new rules have created a more unpredictable and 'gimmicky' racing environment with the emphasis on closer racing and overtaking aids. She expressed concern that constant rule changes could undermine the sport's engineering purity.
Her comments come as Formula 1 continues to evaluate the impact of its ground-effect aerodynamic era, designed to improve wheel-to-wheel racing. While the rules have succeeded in making races more competitive, figures like Williams argue the sport must balance spectacle with technical competition.
