Yin Yuzhen, a Chinese woman known for her decades-long fight against desertification in Inner Mongolia, has reconnected with the U.S. donor who supported her tree-planting efforts more than two decades ago. The reunion was reported by Chinese state media on May 18, 2026.
Yin, who began planting trees in the Mu Us Desert in the 1980s, received financial assistance from an American donor named John in 2004. The donation helped her expand her reforestation work, which has transformed over 70,000 acres of barren land into green forest.
According to reports, Yin and John lost contact over the years, but a recent social media campaign helped locate him. The two spoke via video call, with Yin expressing gratitude for his early support. John, who now lives in California, said he was moved to see the impact of his contribution.
Yin's story has been widely shared as an example of international cooperation in environmental conservation. Her efforts have not only combated desertification but also improved local livelihoods by providing shelter and resources for farming.
