China has announced zero tariffs on nearly 9,000 African products, effective from December 1, 2024, according to a statement from the China State Council Tariff Commission. The measure aims to enhance market access for African goods and strengthen economic ties under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
The tariff exemption covers a wide range of products, including agricultural goods, minerals, and manufactured items, from all African countries that have diplomatic relations with China. This initiative is part of China's commitment to support Africa's development and increase imports from the continent.
According to Chinese customs data, trade between China and Africa reached a record $282.1 billion in 2023, with China being Africa's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years. The zero-tariff policy is expected to further boost this trade volume and benefit African exporters.
Analysts note that the policy aligns with China's broader strategy to diversify its import sources and strengthen South-South cooperation. The move has been welcomed by African nations as a step toward reducing trade imbalances and promoting sustainable economic growth.
