CEBU CITY, Philippines β Health officials in Central Visayas have raised concern over a sharp decline in childhood immunization, after new data showed that fewer than half of toddlers in the region are now fully vaccinated.
The findings, released on May 20, 2026, by the Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas, indicate that only 48% of children aged 12-23 months have received all recommended vaccines, down from 65% in 2024. The decline is attributed to vaccine hesitancy and logistical challenges during the pandemic.
Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, DOH Central Visayas spokesperson, said the drop increases the risk of outbreaks of measles, polio, and other preventable diseases. 'We urge parents to complete their children's vaccinations to protect community health,' she said in a statement.
The DOH is launching a catch-up vaccination campaign in June 2026, targeting 90% coverage by year-end. Health centers in Cebu City and other areas will offer free vaccines.
