Lyles, a Democrat first elected in 2017, has not publicly explained her absence from the zoning meetings, which are typically held twice a month. Council members say her staff has cited scheduling conflicts, but some question whether health or other personal issues are involved. The mayor's office declined to comment for this article.
The zoning meetings are critical for approving development projects in Charlotte, a fast-growing city. Without the mayor's presence, some votes have been delayed or passed with less debate, according to council members. Lyles has attended only two of the last eight zoning meetings, records show.
Political observers note that Lyles, 70, has faced no formal challenge to her leadership, but the absences have fueled speculation about her future. She has not indicated any plans to resign, and her staff says she remains focused on city priorities like affordable housing and transportation.
