Chanute High School in Chanute, Kansas, has been selected to receive a $50,000 environmental education subaward from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The funding is part of the EPA's Environmental Education Grants Program, which supports local projects that promote environmental awareness and stewardship.
The grant will support the school's "Greenhouse to Cafeteria" project, a student-led initiative focused on sustainable agriculture and food systems. Students will work on expanding the school's greenhouse operations and developing a composting program, integrating the work into their science and agriculture curriculum.
"This funding allows our students to engage in hands-on learning that has a direct, positive impact on our community and local environment," said a school district representative. The EPA announced the award in late 2025 as part of a nationwide distribution of funds to various educational institutions and non-profits.
The EPA's grant program is designed to increase public knowledge about environmental issues and provide skills for making informed decisions. Chanute High School was one of several recipients in EPA Region 7, which includes Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa.
