CARE Morocco, the local branch of the international humanitarian organization, called for greater involvement of women leaders in territorial development during a conference held in Rabat on June 25, 2026. The event, titled 'Women Leaders for Inclusive Development,' brought together policymakers, civil society representatives, and women from rural and urban areas.
According to a press release from CARE Morocco, the organization emphasized that women's participation in local governance and economic planning is essential for sustainable development. 'Women are key drivers of change in their communities, yet they remain underrepresented in decision-making bodies,' said Laila Benali, country director of CARE Morocco, as quoted in the release.
The conference highlighted specific barriers women face, including limited access to funding, training, and networks. CARE Morocco presented data showing that only 12% of local council members in Morocco are women, based on a 2023 study by the Moroccan Ministry of Interior. The organization called for quotas and mentorship programs to address this gap.
Participants shared success stories from projects in the Souss-Massa and Oriental regions, where women-led cooperatives have improved agricultural productivity and access to markets. CARE Morocco pledged to expand its 'Women in Leadership' program to 10 additional provinces by 2027, aiming to train 500 women in advocacy and project management.
The event concluded with a call for partnerships between government agencies, NGOs, and private sector to create an enabling environment for women leaders. CARE Morocco reiterated its commitment to supporting women's empowerment as part of its 2025-2030 strategic plan.
