The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor league pitcher Patrick Galle from the Boston Red Sox as the player to be named later to complete the December 2025 trade for right-hander Sonny Gray. The transaction was officially announced by the Cardinals on Monday, April 7, 2026.

Galle, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, was originally selected by the Red Sox in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of the University of Miami. He spent the 2025 season with the Low-A Salem Red Sox, posting a 4.15 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched across 18 appearances, 14 of which were starts.

The trade that sent Sonny Gray to St. Louis was initially agreed upon on December 29, 2025. The Cardinals sent two minor league players to Boston at that time, with the agreement to send a third player—later identified as Galle—at a future date, a common structure known as a player to be named later (PTBNL) deal.

With this acquisition, the Cardinals add a young arm to their farm system, finalizing the return for the Red Sox in the exchange for the veteran starter Gray, who is expected to headline the Cardinals' rotation for the 2026 season.
