A new study published in The Lancet Oncology using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 results has found that global cancer incident cases increased by 229 per cent between 1990 and 2023. The research, which analysed data from 204 countries and territories, highlights the growing burden of cancer worldwide.
In Ghana, the study estimated that cancer cases rose from 467,000 in 1990 to 1.54 million in 2023. The findings underscore the need for strengthened cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
The GBD 2023 study provides comprehensive estimates of cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across age groups and regions. It attributes the rise in cases to population growth, ageing, and changes in exposure to risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and obesity.
Health experts say the data call for urgent investment in cancer control measures, including vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B, screening programmes, and improved access to affordable treatment. The study authors emphasise that without concerted action, the cancer burden will continue to rise, straining health systems and economies.
