The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has implemented a new rule for the Canadian Screen Awards requiring nominees in major performance categories to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The change, announced for the 2025 awards cycle, applies to categories like Best Actor and Best Actress.
According to the Academy, the rule is intended to "celebrate and spotlight Canadian talent" and ensure awards go to individuals who have chosen to make Canada their home. The policy shift means international stars working on Canadian productions would be ineligible for performance awards, though they could still be recognized in other categories like Best Picture.
The decision has drawn criticism from some within the film industry. Director and producer Miranda de Pencier, quoted by CBC News, stated the rule feels "divisive" and could hinder Canada's ability to attract top international talent for collaborations. Others argue it may disadvantage co-productions, which are vital to the Canadian film sector.
The Academy maintains the change aligns with the awards' core mandate to honor Canadian artistic excellence. The 2025 Canadian Screen Awards are scheduled for April 2025.
