Nancy Garapick, a former Canadian swimming star who won two Olympic bronze medals as a teenager, has died. She was 64.
Swimming Canada confirmed her death, stating she died peacefully at her home in Langley, British Columbia, on Monday, April 7, 2026.
A Halifax native, Garapick was a prodigy who set a world record in the 200-metre backstroke at age 13 in 1975. The following year at the Montreal Olympics, the 15-year-old won bronze medals in both the 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke events.
She retired from competitive swimming in 1978 and later worked as a swimming coach and commentator. Garapick was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2021.
