Canada has officially recognized Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara as a credible basis for a mutually acceptable resolution to the regional dispute, according to a statement from Global Affairs Canada on April 29, 2026.
The announcement followed a phone call between Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Indrani and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. During the call, Minister Indrani expressed Canada's support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007, which aims to grant self-governance to the Western Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty.
Canada's position aligns with a growing number of Western nations that view the autonomy plan as a serious and realistic approach to ending the decades-long conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front. The United States and several European countries have previously endorsed similar stances.
The Canadian government also reiterated its support for the United Nations-led political process and called for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights of all parties involved. The statement emphasized Canada's commitment to stability and development in the region.
