Canada's new ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, said the historic ties between the two countries are 'too important' to abandon completely as trade tensions push Ottawa to diversify its economic relationships. Wiseman made the remarks during a virtual event hosted by the Canadian American Business Council on April 23, 2026.
Wiseman, who presented his credentials to U.S. President Donald Trump on April 8, 2026, acknowledged the current challenges in the bilateral relationship, including ongoing disputes over softwood lumber and dairy tariffs. However, he emphasized that the economic integration between the two nations is 'unprecedented' and that Canada remains committed to working with the United States on shared priorities such as energy security and critical minerals.
The ambassador noted that Canada is actively pursuing trade diversification, including recent agreements with the European Union and Indo-Pacific partners, but stressed that the U.S. market remains Canada's most important trading partner, with over $3.6 billion in goods and services crossing the border daily.
Wiseman also highlighted the importance of the Canada-U.S. border for national security and economic prosperity, calling it 'a model for the world.' He urged both governments to find constructive solutions to trade irritants while maintaining the broader strategic partnership.
