Cameroon celebrated its 54th Unity Day on 20 May 2026, with official ceremonies held in the capital Yaoundé and regional capitals. The event commemorates the 1972 referendum that transformed the country from a federal to a unitary state.
President Paul Biya presided over the main parade at the Boulevard of the 20th May in Yaoundé, accompanied by First Lady Chantal Biya and senior government officials. The parade featured contingents from the armed forces, police, and gendarmerie, as well as student groups and cultural troupes.
In his address, the President emphasized national unity and called for peace ahead of the upcoming legislative and municipal elections scheduled for 2026. He also highlighted infrastructure projects and economic reforms underway.
Regional celebrations took place in all 10 regions, including the English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest, where authorities reported peaceful events despite ongoing security challenges. Cultural performances, traditional dances, and sports competitions were organized.
The day was declared a public holiday, with many citizens wearing traditional attire and displaying the national colors. Security was reinforced in major cities to ensure smooth proceedings.
