The head of the PGA of Australia has suggested that Cameron Smith may be rethinking his decision to remain with LIV Golf, as the Saudi-backed circuit faces ongoing financial and structural questions. Smith, a former Open champion and one of Australia's most popular golfers, joined LIV in 2022 for a reported signing bonus exceeding $100 million.
According to Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia, Smith's loyalty to LIV could be tested as the tour's long-term viability remains uncertain. 'He's too young to retire,' Kirkman told Australian media, noting that Smith, 32, still has many competitive years ahead. 'He may be rethinking his position.'
Smith's move to LIV was controversial, as it meant leaving the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, which ban players who join the Saudi-funded league. Since then, Smith has won three LIV events but has seen his world ranking drop from a career-high of No. 2 to outside the top 50, as LIV events do not earn Official World Golf Ranking points.
The PGA of Australia has maintained a neutral stance, allowing LIV players to compete in domestic events, but Kirkman's comments signal growing concern about the impact on Australian golf. 'We want our best players competing at the highest level,' he said.
