The Calcutta High Court on Monday stayed the demolition of a building in Kolkata that houses the office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee. The court ordered the status quo to be maintained until the next hearing, scheduled for July 26, 2026.
The demolition was ordered by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the state's urban development department, citing alleged illegal construction. The building, located in the Ballygunge area, also houses the office of Leaps & Bounds, a company where Banerjee's father, Amit Banerjee, is a director.
Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court observed that the demolition was carried out without prior notice to the occupants, violating principles of natural justice. The court directed the authorities to not take any coercive action until the next hearing.
TMC leaders have alleged that the demolition was politically motivated, while the state government has denied any such motive, stating that the action was taken based on a court order related to illegal constructions.
The matter is now listed for further hearing on July 26, 2026.
