The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stated it will comply with the forthcoming ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the host nation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The decision follows a period of uncertainty after CAF stripped Guinea of hosting rights in 2022 due to infrastructure concerns.
Morocco was subsequently named as the replacement host for the 2025 tournament. However, Algeria's football federation filed an appeal with CAS, challenging the awarding of the hosting rights to its regional rival. The core of the dispute centers on the procedural fairness of CAF's decision-making process.
A CAS hearing on the matter was held in March 2025. The court's final verdict is pending, but CAF President Patrice Motsepe has publicly affirmed the organization's commitment to respecting the outcome, emphasizing the importance of legal and sporting integrity.
The resolution of this case is critical for tournament planning, as the 2025 AFCON is scheduled to be held in the Northern Hemisphere summer. The competing bids from Morocco and a joint bid from Algeria and Tunisia remain central to the dispute awaiting CAS's judgment.
