The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially denied rumors that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would expand from 24 to 28 teams. In a statement released on July 23, 2026, CAF clarified that no such decision has been made and that the tournament will remain with 24 teams as originally planned.
The rumors had circulated on social media and some sports outlets, suggesting that CAF was considering an expansion to accommodate more teams. However, CAF's statement emphasized that the format for the 2027 edition, to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, remains unchanged.
CAF also reiterated that any future changes to the tournament format would be communicated through official channels after thorough consultation with member associations. The 2027 AFCON is scheduled to take place in June and July 2027.
