Burundi's ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), has officially designated President Évariste Ndayishimiye as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The decision was announced during a party congress held in Gitega, the political capital, on April 25, 2026.
Ndayishimiye, who has been in power since 2020, is expected to seek a second term. The 2027 election will be a key test for the country's political stability, which has been marred by past conflicts and a controversial 2018 constitutional referendum that extended presidential term limits.
Opposition parties have criticized the move, citing concerns over electoral transparency and political space. However, the CNDD-FDD maintains that Ndayishimiye's candidacy reflects the will of the party's base and the broader population.
