Paul Burrell, former butler to Diana, Princess of Wales, has claimed that her brother Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, "barely spoke" to her during the final years of her life and was not there when she needed him. Burrell made the allegation in comments reported by British media, as the 62-year-old Earl published a memoir this week.
The book, titled Swan Song, is a memoir about the Spencer family's childhood at Althorp, the family estate in Northamptonshire, according to reports. It was published this week.
Diana and Charles Spencer were two of the four children of John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, and Frances Shand Kydd. Diana died in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, aged 36. Charles Spencer delivered a widely reported eulogy at her funeral in Westminster Abbey.
Burrell worked as Diana's butler for several years until her death. His claims about the siblings' relationship have not been confirmed by Earl Spencer, and no response from his representatives was reported at the time of writing.
