Plans for a solar farm and battery storage park the size of more than 100 football pitches have been approved by Brentwood Borough Council's planning committee by a single vote. The decision, made on July 22, 2026, followed a heated debate over the loss of agricultural land and visual impact on the countryside.
The scheme, proposed by renewable energy firm Enso Energy, will be located on land near the A12 in Brentwood, Essex. It includes solar panels and battery storage capable of powering thousands of homes. Council documents state the site covers approximately 70 hectares.
Opponents, including local residents and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, argued the development would harm the green belt and reduce food production. However, supporters cited the urgent need for renewable energy to meet net-zero targets. The vote was tied until the committee chair cast the deciding vote in favor.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, pending final approvals. The project is part of the UK's broader push to increase solar capacity to 70 GW by 2035.
