Botswana has officially broken ground on a major 500-megawatt (MW) solar power project integrated with battery energy storage. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 21, 2026, at the planned site in the country's Central District.
The project, a public-private partnership between the government and international developers, represents a significant step in Botswana's strategy to diversify its energy mix away from coal. It is designed to enhance domestic energy security and create surplus power for export to neighboring countries in the Southern African Power Pool.
Once operational, the solar farm is expected to be one of the largest of its kind in the region. The integrated battery storage system is crucial for managing the intermittent nature of solar power, ensuring a more stable and reliable electricity supply.
Officials state the development will create jobs, attract investment, and support Botswana's commitments under international climate agreements. The project aligns with the country's vision to become a net electricity exporter by 2030.
