Toronto Blue Jays infielder Luisangel Gimenez is adapting to a new defensive role this spring, taking reps at shortstop. Acquired from the New York Mets in 2023, Gimenez has primarily played second base in the minors but is now working to increase his versatility.

"It's a new challenge for me," Gimenez said through a team interpreter regarding the position switch. "I'm just trying to get more comfortable there every day." The 23-year-old is a non-roster invitee to major league camp, competing for a utility role.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider has emphasized the importance of defensive flexibility, particularly for bench players. Gimenez's speed and athleticism make him a candidate to fill in at multiple infield spots if he makes the roster.

The organization views his work at shortstop as a key development step. His performance this spring will be a significant factor in determining whether he breaks camp with the major league team or begins the season with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
