A dispute has emerged in Birkdale over a sewage overflow issue, with a developer facing a $320,000 bill from Watercare to upgrade a pipe. The problem causes raw sewage to flow onto a neighbor's lawn during heavy rain, according to local reports.
The developer, who is trying to save $100,000 on the upgrade, stated: 'Yes, Iβm trying to save $100,000 for that upgrade of the pipe, but if I donβt go forward with this project, then this guy still has raw sewage running over his lawn every time it rains heavily.' Two other developers in the area have reportedly stalled their projects due to the issue.
Watercare has not commented on the specific case, but the situation highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges in the Auckland region. The dispute underscores tensions between property development and aging wastewater systems.
