The Hassan II Hospital in Beni Mellal has announced the successful completion of its first endoscopic spine surgery, marking a significant advancement in the region's neurosurgical capabilities. The minimally invasive procedure was performed on a patient suffering from a herniated disc, a condition where the soft cushion between vertebrae slips out.
Endoscopic spine surgery involves using a small camera and specialized instruments inserted through a tiny incision, typically less than one centimeter. This technique aims to reduce muscle damage, postoperative pain, and recovery time compared to traditional open spine surgery. The hospital stated the patient's condition improved following the operation.
The achievement is part of ongoing efforts to decentralize specialized medical care in Morocco, bringing advanced surgical options closer to patients outside major urban centers. The hospital's medical team underwent specific training to master the technique, which is becoming more common globally for certain spinal conditions.
While this is a first for the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region, endoscopic spine procedures have been performed in other Moroccan cities like Rabat and Casablanca in recent years. The successful implementation highlights the growing adoption of minimally invasive surgical methods in the country's public healthcare system.
