After a very wet start to 2026, most of Australia is forecast to experience calm and settled weather over the Easter long weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology indicates that a high-pressure system will bring generally clear skies and mild conditions to southern and eastern regions, including major cities like Sydney and Melbourne.
This follows a period of significant rainfall. The Bureau confirmed that the combined February-March period was the third-wettest on record for Australia nationally, driven by a persistent humid easterly flow and several rain-bearing systems.
However, the weather bureau is monitoring a tropical low in the Coral Sea. The system has a moderate chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the coming days. If it forms, it would be named Cyclone Kirrily. Current modelling suggests any potential cyclone would likely move away from the Queensland coast, but it is expected to generate heavy rainfall and strong winds for parts of the far northern coast and reef areas.
Authorities are urging residents and travellers in northern Queensland to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings over the holiday period, despite the favourable conditions expected across the bulk of the country.
