The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, was received in Rabat by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on April 1, 2026. During the meeting, Faki emphasized the critical need for a continental payment system as a missing link to facilitate intra-African trade.
Faki stated that such a system is essential for the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He argued it would reduce transaction costs and dependency on external currencies, thereby strengthening economic integration.
The visit, described as a working visit, also covered discussions on peace, security, and development issues across the continent. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the AU's strategic agenda.
