Arizona State University's second female mascot, who performed as Sparky the Sun Devil, recently reflected on her time in Tempe. The former mascot, whose identity remains private, served during the early 2020s, a period when ASU saw increased visibility for its mascot program.
In an interview, she described the physical demands of the role, including performing at football games and campus events in the Arizona heat. She noted that being Sparky required endurance and a commitment to embodying the spirited, mischievous character that represents ASU.
The first female Sparky debuted in 2018, breaking a long tradition of male performers. The second female mascot continued this legacy, helping to diversify the role. ASU's mascot program has since maintained a policy of selecting performers based on skill and enthusiasm, regardless of gender.
