Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized the way Washington Sundar is being used in India's T20I side, stating that the all-rounder has not been given a clear role despite consistent selection. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted that Sundar's batting position and bowling usage have been inconsistent under head coach Gautam Gambhir's tenure, which began in July 2024.
Ashwin specifically noted that Sundar, who has played 10 T20Is since Gambhir took over, has batted at various positions from No. 3 to No. 8 and has not been given a fixed role. He also pointed out that Sundar's bowling has been underutilized, with him bowling only 12 overs in his last 5 T20Is. Ashwin argued that such treatment could harm the player's confidence and development.
Washington Sundar, 26, has been a part of India's T20I setup since 2017 but has struggled to cement a spot. His recent performances include scores of 14, 6, and 0 in his last three T20I innings, and he has taken 2 wickets in his last 5 matches. Ashwin's comments come amid India's preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the team looking to finalize their squad.
Gautam Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach, has faced criticism for his handling of several players, including Sundar. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not officially responded to Ashwin's remarks. Sundar's next opportunity could come in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka in July 2026.
