MELAKA, Aug 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that acts of “sakau” (siphoning of funds) did occur in Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), following the loss of billions of ringgit as highlighted in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report.
Speaking at an event in Melaka today, Anwar said the RCI findings revealed that RM12 billion was lost, and questioned, “RM12b was lost, isn’t that sakau?” He emphasized that such actions cannot be tolerated and that those responsible must be held accountable.
The RCI, which was established to investigate allegations of mismanagement and fund misappropriation in TH, submitted its report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong earlier this year. The report detailed significant financial losses and governance failures within the pilgrimage fund board.
Anwar’s remarks come amid ongoing public scrutiny over the management of TH, which manages savings for millions of Malaysian Muslims for their pilgrimage to Mecca. The government has pledged to take necessary action based on the RCI’s recommendations.
